Will The ICANN Vote Make A Difference?

The last few days have seen the emergence of what many consider will be a new period of growth in the internet with ICANN voting to increase the number of top-level domains (tld) on the market and affectively open the flood gates. But will it really make a big difference?

While there are many that are concerned that the idea of issuing any reasonable request for a new tld will blow the market wide open and attract all kinds of fraudsters and scammers, there are other that believe the old .com, .co.uk, etc will always hold major sway over internet users and webmasters.

Would you feel more inclined to buy from a .ebay tld? Would you trust your finances with a .banking tld?

The truth is that like so many new ideas which have hit the internet over the last 20 years, nobody knows how they will work out and the long term impact they may or may not have.

How many weird names do Yahoo got?

I was going true some domain names when I started finding weird Yahoo! domain names that they had registered, so I decided to do some investigations . Since more people then just Yahoo are using their name servers nsX.yahoo.com (they’re also used for their hosting clients) that was a dead end, so I created a list of all domain names pointing to the same IP address as yahoo.com.

That’s a big list with more then 8,500 domain names pointing to yahoo.com . Most of them are .com domains, but they also got .biz, .info, .org and .net domain names.

If you say that they pay about $7 per domain name then the total cost for all names on the list would be $59,584 and I’m sure they have even more domain names registered that I didn’t find during this investigation.

Some of the domain names show us that they have prepared several partnerships with other companies: GOOGLEANDYAHOO.COM and MICROSOFT-YAHOO.COM.

Misspellings

When you got a popular site you have to protect your visitors from misspellings. Could also be names registered by phising sites trying to steal your Yahoo login.

I don’t want to be a computer geek any more…..

A couple of weeks ago I signed a contract and got the question why I had such effective signature (it’s basically just A and d in my name). The answer is because of my previous job where I sometimes could sign document after document all day long. Since I sometimes didn’t have time for coffee I figured that I needed a new signature, something faster and something easier, so I developed a new signature. This answer wasn’t really the answer the people who asked the question hoped for. They guessed on pop star, which would have made this story much more fun and entertaining

Several weeks later (and a few dreams about becoming a pop star) later I searched at Google Video for a (I think) Slovenian group called Skuter. It turns out that they have changed name to Skater instead, but during the searches I made I found another (I think) Slovenian video:

I have no idea what they’re singing, but just look at two of the group members (I will let you do the guessing ). I’m not a big fan of polka, but if the girls look like that then I’m open to suggestions . Just check out this (also) Slovenian music video from Atomik Harmonik:

So here’s my plan: Since beautiful girls seem to like polka I’m going team up with someone to do a music video. Since I can’t play any instrument, can’t sing and can’t write the text I have to hire someone to do that. The singing part wouldn’t be any problem, I just hire two (or maybe even four) beautiful girls, so beautiful that everyone forget all about the singing….. Then when the music video can be found on YouTube.com I can tell the pop star story about my signature.
